Richard Gere and his wife, Alejandra Silva, have some big news: They’re about to start a family. Silva announced that she and Gere will be expecting a baby on Instagram today with an amazing photo that showed the Dalai Lama and Gere touching her midsection.
“A very special moment just a few minutes ago… Getting blessings for our precious to come,” Silva captioned the Instagram post. “We couldn’t announce it before telling HH Dalai Lama.” She repeated the message in Spanish. Gere has had a longstanding friendship with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the couple made sure that he was the first person to hear the good news. He blessed her bump and what’s sure to be an iconic birth announcement got posted to the ‘Gram.
This is the second child for both Gere and Silva, but it is the first one they’ll have together. Gere has a son, Homer James Jigme, from a previous marriage with Carey Lowell. Silva has a 5-and-a-half-year-old son, Albert, from a past relationship.
Gere and Silva have been dating since 2014, but according to Entertainment Weekly, the two had known each other for over a decade. In April of this year, a source told People that they’d married in a small, private ceremony.
“They’re so comfortable with each other, have fun together and are looking forward to their future together,” the source revealed.
After the civil ceremony, Gere and Silva celebrated with more friends at Gere’s New York estate in May. EW adds that the event included several Tibetan monks. The wedding came after his high-profile divorce, which was finally completed in 2016 after a three-year separation from his then-wife Lowell. Prior to her, Gere was married to Cindy Crawford. Silva, an activist and publicist, was previously married to Govind Friedland.
