When the pre-show advice is “wear flat shoes” and the invitation is illustrated with a striped seaside umbrella and #CHANELByTheSea, all bets were off that sand would be involved.
Dressed in our fanciest flats with trepidation that we’d end up barefoot to save our shoes, the fashion pack (plus front row guests Pharell Williams and Pamela Anderson) descended on the Grand Palais this morning in Paris.
Chanel shows are the penultimate flourish of fashion month and Karl Lagerfeld always masterminds magnificent sets.
In the past, they’ve run from a mocked-up supermarket where guests could help themselves to fruit after the show to a space age theme accompanied by an actual rocket taking off. Today’s theme was seaside chic.
The catwalk was transformed into a beachy set, complete with wooden boardwalk (so thankfully no dunes of sand for us to wade through), clumps of marram grass and models taking on the vital role of lifeguards – the jammiest job of #PFW.
The set took an epic ten days to build and as a seagull soundtrack signalled the start of the show, Kaia Gerber, Adowa Aboah and Anna Ewars strolled barefoot through the surf (yes, Karl installed a wave machine to ensure waves gently lapped the sand.)
Shocking pink lipstick and beachy waves (obviously) were today’s beauty look – some accessorised with crystal double C clips – but we’ll be copying the loose ribbon ties that held the soft half pony up-dos right now.
When our next sunshine holiday comes round, indigo blue lace, super soft pastel tweeds, beach-ball bags, clear plastic sandals and clever cross body double bags will be on our packing wishlist while the raw-edged straw sunhats and CHA – NEL logos on updated straw visors will fill your Instagram feeds when they hit the shops.
But right now? We have a holiday to research…
