London has some fine, fine hotel suites – the Penthouse Suite at The Mandrake in Fitzrovia has a marble Jacuzzi under a retractable roof; the Royal Suite at The Savoy has opulence beyond measure; the Concept Rooms at the Hoxton, Shoreditch, have been individually designed by local artists; and The Exhibitionist Hotel in Kensington does exactly what it says on the tin.
But W London – Leicester Square, which has done a fine job of establishing itself as the place to see and be seen since opening in 2010, has blown them out of the water following its recent multi-million pound renovation and the relaunch of its Extreme WOW Suite.
The hotel overhauled all 192 guest rooms and suites earlier this summer in a daring, provocative renovation in partnership with daring fashion fantasist and artist Jack Irving, alongside innovative in-room technology.
Taking inspiration straight from the catwalk and remixing it with the bold attitude of W London, Irving has dotted each room with spiked pillows, which appear as, you know, just your standard spiky cushion, until you line them up for that killer Instagram post – pop your flash on and the ‘rainbow smart fabric’ transforms into an iridescent masterpiece. It’s as close to Lady Gaga’s sea urchin look – created by Irving – as you’re likely to get, and we’re labelling it ‘techoration’.
But it’s The Extreme WOW Suite you want to spend the night in. It has interconnecting rooms (one king and one larger suite featuring a super king-size W bed), a separate living room, separate dining area, in-room Jacuzzi, dual-head rainforest shower, revolving Chesterfield sofa, hanging bubble chair, complimentary Mega Bar experience (an in-room bar service complete with personal mixologist, sound system and disco ball) AND a DJ station with a selection of vinyl and Bose surround sound.
Plus, there’s a huge Union Jack gracing the back wall, with further splashes of red and blue added through soft furnishings, making this huge, luxurious suite serious penthouse suite goals for Mods (and Rockers, and Millennials, and, frankly, those in London for a good time).
Irving has also curated a number of in-room experiences. You can listen to electric disco tune Strandbar by Todd Terje while ordering his favourite show-stopping cocktail, the Blood Orange Smash, a Negroni-twist encapsulated in a frozen sphere served with a hammer for the ultimate reveal.
Then devour the Capsule Collection, a trio of indulgent artisan gelato served in flavours like Chocolate-Choco Cream, fruity Strawberry and Coconut, and tropical Pineapple and Papaya.

‘When set with the task, I took inspiration from Soho’s creative energy and W London’s irreverent attitude, to create a unique statement piece that unites the hotel fabulous new room design and upgraded functionality.’
There’s plenty of fun to be had outside of The Extreme WOW Suite, too. Every one of W London’s 192 guest rooms, including 28 suites, has been uniquely designed by Concrete and kitted out by Kraus Architects. Alongside structural upgrades there are daring new feature walls, refreshed avant-garde furniture and atmospheric lighting. Sleek white details, photo-friendly mirrored walls, and party-starting disco balls complete the new look.
Every room also has full DigiValet technology – one of the most advanced tablet-based systems in the industry. You can select your music and lighting, control the in-room temperature and personal streaming services, all at the touch of a button. Book a massage at the hotel’s urban oasis, AWAY Spa or reserve a table at the hotel’s bar, The Perception.
W London has also teamed up with Kobalt, a music tech company, to curate playlists showcasing London’s coolest up-and-coming artists, including the hotel’s own Music Curator, DJ and Producer Olivia Dawn. Global music-lovers can tune in to hear what’s playing in real time at any of the 55 W Hotels worldwide through advanced music technology by Soundtrackyourbrand.
The tablet also gives you insider access to what’s new and next in London with an ever-evolving calendar of happenings, including the hotel’s music programming and the latest dining and entertainment suggestions across the city. It also features a selection of cocktail masterclass videos so you can recreate your favourite cocktail without leaving the comfort of your room.
The renovation completes the hotel’s full transformation, following the redesign of The Perception at W London bar and lounge in 2017 and the AWAY Spa’s makeover in 2018.
