I’ll hold my hands up: I’m a lover of sequins, a virtual magpie, and I certainly don’t need a party invitation to add a little sparkle to my wardrobe.
However, I acknowledge it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, and they can be a bit all or nothing, making it daunting for those wanting to dress up just a tad for party season.
Which is why I’ve recently embraced toned-down sequins, and yes, there is such a thing. It’s all about avoiding Studio 54, Dynasty-esque head-to-toe sequins. Because whilst fun on the catwalk at 16Arlington or Ashish, it really doesn’t translate well into every day life.
Luckily, as always, my favourite brands have come up trumps, offering up subtle styles that can easily be mixed and matched with your existing pieces, even during the day.
You must admit that as far as grown up sequin styles go, this Zara skirt is pretty epic. At just shy of £100, it’s a bit more premium than the rest of the range, however it looks much more expensive than it is, and this is one style you’ll be digging out every party season, trust me. Style it during the day with an oversized cream cashmere knit and matching high boots.
I’ve actually just ordered this one, because despite being covered in burgundy sequins, it’s actually a great paired back party dress, thanks to its classic 90s silhouette. I’ll be wearing it with just a simple strappy black sandal.
Everyone needs a pair of party shoes in their wardrobe, and these are it. Thanks to a subtle wash of silver glitter, these mules won’t make you look like you’ve walked straight off the yellow brick road, plus the square toes ensure they are bang on trend for autumn winter. Wear with jeans and a checked blazer during the day, and a sexy white slip in the evening.
